About the event
The FOA/IMSA Certified Fiber Specialist / Design Course is a specialist application certification covering fiber optic network design intended for network owners, IT personnel, facilities managers, network designers, inspectors, estimators, or technicians involved in the design or installation of fiber networks. This course is especially recommended for network owners and planners who may not be familiar with the fiber optic network design process as it can make their jobs easier and their projects better. The FOA/IMSA CFOT Certification is highly recommended but not required as a prerequisite for this course.
The Course Manual can be purchased from the Amazon Link: FOA CFOS/D Manual. Students must have the paperback version of the manual for the first day of the course.
This is a three-day hybrid course with three to four weeks in between class days to allow students time to study and work on course projects. The course schedule and objectives are as follows.
Class Dates:
Day One: 5/8/23 - Online
Day Two: 5/31/23 - Online
Fiber 101: 6/14/23 - Inperson, Rocky Point, Tampa
Day Three: 6/15/23 - Inperson, Rocky Point, Tampa
Day One (Online): The first day of the CFOS/D covers the basic introduction to Fiber Optic Design and course expectations, Planning the Network, Choosing Components, Project Specs, Planning, and managing projects, review of homework, and assigning project templates.
Day Two (Online): The second day of the CFOS/D will cover, Testing requirements, Loss Budget Analysis, Loss Budget exercises, and a Review of course project status.
Fiber Basics 101 (In Person): Fiber Basics 101 is a nonmandatory 8hr in-person class day that will be held the day before day three of the CFOS/D. It is meant to help students that don’t have their CFOT or perhaps would just like a quick refresher on the basics of Fiber Optic Cable handling, splicing, and testing. Understanding these basic principles will help students with the system testing and final exam they will be involved with on the third and final day of the CFOS/D Course.
Day Three (In Person): The third and final day of the course will start with reviewing the Design Loss budget and OTDR testing exercises starting on day two. This will be followed by the course project presentations, a review, and the final exam.
